Baya Weaver

The Baya Weaver (Ploceus philippinus) is a captivating small bird renowned for its intricate nest-building skills, primarily found across the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia, including Thailand. Characterized by its bright yellow crown, white underparts, and a conspicuous black patch around its eyes, the Baya Weaver is a sight to behold, especially during the breeding season. In Thailand, they are commonly seen in open grasslands, paddy fields, and wetland areas. One of the most remarkable features of the Baya Weaver is its hanging retort-shaped nests, intricately woven using long grass strands. These nests are often found suspended from tall grasses or trees over water bodies. While the males are responsible for the initial structure, the females add the finishing touches once they approve of the site. The Baya Weaver's presence in Thailand adds a unique charm to the nation's rich avian biodiversity.
